Programme
Theory module, cardiac arrest and the chain of survival (1 hour)
- Epidemiology of sudden cardiac arrest in Italy
- The chain of survival: recognition, emergency call, BLS, early defibrillation
- Legislation on the use of the AED by non-medical personnel (Law 116/2021)
- Types of defibrillator: differences between the AED and manual devices
- Legal liability and insurance aspects for the non-medical rescuer
Practical exercises, adult BLS (2 hours)
- Assessing the scene and making it safe
- Recognising cardiac arrest: absence of consciousness and of breathing
- Adult BLS sequence: 30 compressions + 2 ventilations
- Quality of compressions: rate, depth, full recoil
- Opening the airway and ventilation with a pocket mask
- Rotation of rescuers and management of fatigue
Practical exercises, use of the AED (2 hours)
- Switching on, placing the pads and analysing the rhythm
- Delivering the shock safely
- Integrating the AED into the BLS sequence: keeping interruptions to a minimum
- Handling particular situations: wet pads, pacemakers, clothing
- Full scenario simulations: cardiac arrest in a company setting
Objectives
To qualify non-medical personnel to recognise cardiac arrest promptly and to perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation correctly, combined with the use of the semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED), improving survival in the event of a cardiac emergency in the workplace.
